The keys to good instructional design

Instructional design is the process of planning, developing and evaluating effective learning experiences. It is a complex discipline that requires a deep understanding of the psychology of learning, educational technology and communication theory. It is important to clarify that instructional design is not only present in the educational context but also in the corporate context, for example in training and in any training class at different levels.

Good instructional design is essential to the success of any learning program. It can help ensure that students learn efficiently and effectively, and that they achieve set learning objectives.

Below, we share six keys to good instructional design:

1. Understand the needs of students.

The first step in instructional design is understanding the needs of the students. What do they need to learn? What knowledge and skills should they acquire? What are your learning styles? Once students’ needs are understood, a learning plan can be developed to suit them.

2. Specify learning objectives.

Learning objectives are clear, concise statements of what students should be able to do at the end of a learning program. They must be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

3. Apply appropriate learning strategies.

There are many different learning strategies that can be used to help students achieve their goals. Appropriate learning strategies must be consistent with the learning objectives and learning styles of the students.

Some ideas for appropriate learning strategies in instructional design:

  • Active learning: Active learning is a learning strategy that requires students to actively participate in the learning process. It can be done through activities, discussions or projects.
  • Problem-based learning: Problem-based learning is a learning strategy that engages students in solving real-world problems. It can be an effective way to encourage critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Collaborative learning: Collaborative learning is a learning strategy that involves students working together to learn. It can be an effective way to foster collaboration and teamwork skills.

4. Develop attractive and interactive content.

Learning content must be attractive and interactive to keep students’ attention. They should also be relevant to students’ interests and experiences, and should be designed to encourage active participation.

5. Evaluate learning.

Assessment is essential to ensure that students are learning what is expected of them. Assessment should be comprehensive and should use a variety of methods to measure learning.

Some specific methods that can be used:

  • Exam: Exams are a common form of assessment. They can be written, oral or practical.
  • Briefcase: A portfolio is a collection of student work that is used to assess learning over time.
  • Project: A project is an assignment that requires students to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world context.
  • Comment: Observation is a way to evaluate learning by observing students in action.

6. Provide appropriate recognition.

Recognition is an important way to motivate students and encourage continuous learning. Appropriate recognition must be specific, timely and relevant. It should focus on students’ achievements, and should be provided in a way that is meaningful to them. Recognition can take many forms, such as positive feedback, awards, or leadership opportunities. Instructional designers must carefully consider how to provide appropriate recognition to students. For example, leave aside the usual diplomas and add value to them with more modern, secure and attractive formats such as digital credentials.

By following these keys, instructional designers can create effective learning experiences that help students achieve their goals.

  • Use a student-based approach. Instructional design should focus on the needs and experiences of students.
  • Be focused on results. Instructional design should focus on the outcomes that students are expected to achieve.
  • Be flexible and adaptable. Instructional design must be able to adapt to the changing needs of students.
  • Prioritize recognition with the appropriate formats, taking care of the student’s motivation.
