San Valero Group: training with social commitment

July 25, 2023

El San Valero Group is a private educational entity based in Zaragoza, Spain. It is made up of various educational institutions ranging from early childhood education to higher education and vocational training. Founded in 1953, the San Valero Group’s main objective is to offer a comprehensive and quality education to its students. Its institutions include colleges, secondary education institutes, vocational schools, as well as universities and higher education centers. The San Valero Group stands out for its focus on educational innovation, continuous improvement and adaptation to the needs of the current labor market. In addition to academic training, it promotes ethical and social values in its students, encouraging their personal and professional development. Training with social commitment.

What were the challenges?

From the Transversal Group, made up of representatives of the different entities of the group, the need was identified to publicize the skills developed by the students, teachers and collaborators of the different programs, something innovative that went beyond the diploma. That is why it was decided to undertake the search for some type of incentive or innovative format that would allow this to be achieved. The official diploma failed to capture soft skills such as teamwork, among others. From there arose this need to make these skills visible.

Why did you decide to use Digital Credentials?

In the group they realized that complementary and solidarity projects (such as ApS) had to be recognized. When doing a little research, digital credentials were the format that they found most aligned with the purpose of highlighting the values, knowledge, skills and aptitudes acquired in these dynamics. Furthermore, for the group it was very important that the recognition to be granted complied with the Sustainable Development Goals. Credentials have been the ideal type of recognition to achieve this.

How has its implementation been?

At first the adoption was difficult, since it was something unknown that the students found atypical. It has been a challenge that has involved socialization of the format, which has borne fruit. After a while, the students themselves take advantage of and appreciate being granted this type of credentials. In addition to the ApS, its application has been expanded in other activities such as competitions, workshops, seminars or national challenges.

What results have they obtained?

The students, teachers and collaborators who have received these credentials have been surprised by the level of detail they contain. They have also highlighted the fact that evidence can be attached to the recognition. Furthermore, these accredited people actively share their credentials on networks, email signatures, and so on. This did not happen at the beginning, when we were just starting to encourage adoption. Now it happens organically given the appeal of the format. According to José Manuel Pascal, Teaching Manager of the SEAS Campus, there is notable interest in digital badges; The group has managed to demonstrate these skills and aptitudes through credentials. Since this project began, almost 1.200 badges have been awarded and it is expected that by the end of the year there will be almost 2.000 people or entities that, due to their connection to the Group and good work, will achieve this recognition.
