What are the drivers that move the student experience?

Student experience is a concept that refers to a student’s perception of their learning environment. It is influenced by a series of factors, both internal and external. Internal factors include the student’s characteristics, such as his or her personality, interests, and goals. On the other hand, external ones include the learning environment, such as infrastructure, teaching staff and teaching materials.

Drivers are the variables that drive the student experience. They can be positive or negative, and can have a significant impact on student learning and well-being. Some of the most important drivers of the student experience are the following:

The relevance:

The student must perceive that what he is learning is relevant to his interests and objectives. When students see the value in what they are learning, they are more motivated to participate and learn.

The motivation:

The student must be motivated to learn. Motivation can be intrinsic or extrinsic. This comes from the student’s own interest, while extrinsic motivation comes from external factors, such as rewards or recognition.

The participation:

The student must feel involved in the learning process. Active participation helps students understand concepts and retain information.

Active learning:

The student must be an active participant in his or her own learning. When it is active it is more effective than passive learning, which is based on the simple reception of information.

The feedback:

The student must receive feedback on his or her progress. This helps students identify their strengths and weaknesses, and improve their learning.

Support:

The student must feel supported by his or her peers, faculty, and staff. This is essential to the well-being of students and their academic success.

The technology:

Today’s students are digital natives who require resources adapted to that reality. For example, it is more useful for a student to receive a digital credential than a traditional physical diploma.

Recognition:

A student recognized throughout the program and not just at the end will enjoy their learning experience more.

Educational institutions can improve the student experience by taking these drivers into account. For example, they can offer programs that are relevant to students’ interests, provide active learning opportunities, and offer feedback to students about their progress.

Examples

Some examples of how educational institutions can improve the student experience:

  • Offer courses that adapt to needs and individual student preferences. This can be done by offering a variety of courses with different focuses and formats.
  • Use innovative teaching methods that promote active learning. This can be done using techniques such as problem-based learning, cooperative learning, and project-based learning.
  • Create a learning environment that is welcoming and conducive to learning. This can be done by creating a physical and social environment that is comfortable and stimulating.
  • Recognize with microcredentials. This type of credential allows you to demonstrate the skills acquired from start to finish in an extensive program. They are smaller in scale and are also awarded for completing a defined set of courses, training or experience in a particular area. They result in an excellent strategy to motivate the student during the learning process.
  • Offer support to students, both academic and emotional. This can be done by providing academic support services, such as tutoring and counseling, as well as emotional support services, such as mental health services and vocational counseling services.

Although by focusing on these drivers, educational institutions can create a more positive and effective learning experience for their students, recognizing them with digital credentials is one of the essential strategies that generate the best results.
