Tecmilenio’s commitment to digital credentials: from 500 to 30 thousand beneficiaries

June 2, 2023

The company

La Tecmilenio University is a private higher education institution located in Mexico, founded in 2002. It is part of the Monterrey technological system, which has more than 30 campuses throughout the country. The university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of disciplines, including business, engineering, technology, social sciences and education. One of the aspects that stands out about the Tecmilenio University is its focus on competency-based education, which seeks to develop practical skills in students that allow them to face the challenges of today’s world of work. Additionally, Tecmilenio University is recognized for its commitment to innovation and technology in education. It has implemented initiatives such as the use of online platforms and the delivery of digital badges to recognize the skills and achievements of its students.

What were the challenges?

The University was looking for a faster and more efficient way to recognize the academic achievements of its students. Instead of waiting for students to complete an entire academic program spanning several months or years, they wanted a way to recognize student achievements immediately. Besides, the institution was concerned about the authenticity and veracity of the information included in the digital badges. They knew it was important to ensure that the information included on the badges was accurate and verifiable, so that employers and other institutions could have confidence in the validity of students’ achievements.

Why did you decide to use Digital Badges?

Among the reasons that led Tecmilenio to bet on digital badges, the following stands out: the innovation of the format and the ease with which it allows recognizing the academic achievements of students quickly and efficiently. Also the authenticity and veracity of the information contained in the badges, which makes them a valuable tool for the identification of specific skills by third parties: a compelling reason for the University.

How has its implementation been?

The University assigned different teams to handle different parts of the process, such as badge design, competency definition, and metadata. Each team worked closely to ensure the badges were accurate, relevant and meaningful. Additionally, an awareness campaign was launched to educate students about the benefits of earning digital badges. This included information about how badges could help them stand out in the job market and demonstrate their skills and achievements more effectively. Also, they allowed companies to customize programs that meet their specific needs.

What results have they obtained?

The initiative has been a success, since the University has accredited more than 30,000 students with digital badges and has created more than 1,400 types of badges. Companies can perfectly identify employees who possess certain skills, and students can demonstrate their skills and competencies in detail to employers. Overall, the implementation of digital badges has proven to be a valuable tool to recognize academic achievements quickly and efficiently in the University ecosystem.
