La University of Monterrey (UDEM) is a private educational institution based in Monterrey, Mexico, that has stood out for its innovative approach to education. Background
The history of digital badges at UDEM dates back to the vision of Mihály Sugár, Director of Online Education. Sugar had been interested in digital badges for several years, and in 2016, he began designing a digital badge system for UDEM. At the time, the system was rudimentary and did not take full advantage of available technology.
Implementación
The process of implementing digital badges at UDEM took an important leap in 2021, when the university decided to partner with Acredita, a company specialized in blockchain-based certification solutions. This collaboration allowed us to develop a more sophisticated and versatile digital badge system. Finally, in 2022, UDEM officially launched its digital badge system.
Implementation stages
The successful implementation of digital badges at UDEM was divided into four key stages:
- Onboarding: In this initial stage, UDEM created a landing website dedicated to the digital badge system. It also developed a comprehensive training program for users. This ensured that both students and academic staff were prepared to make the most of the digital badges.
- Support: The university established a dedicated support team to respond to user questions and concerns. This ensured a smooth transition and positive experience for everyone involved.
- Implementación: The UDEM implemented the digital badge system, guaranteeing its functionality and reliability. Badges could be awarded for a variety of achievements, such as completing courses, participating in special events, or completing academic projects.
- Promotion: Finally, the university actively promoted the digital badge system to its entire academic community. This included both students and teachers, encouraging widespread adoption and active use of the badges.

The UDEM digital badge system has proven to be a resounding success. Since its implementation, more than 100.000 digital badges have been awarded to students and staff members. These digital badges have had a significant impact on student motivation and engagement.
An important detail is that UDEM digital badges can be obtained for a wide variety of activities. This allows recognition of both academic and extracurricular achievements. Additionally, these badges are easily shareable on social media and can be integrated into resumes, adding value to student training.
