After 4 years of spreading the idea of digital badges in Latin America, there is still a long way to go in terms of their use, description, adoption and next steps. The first step is to have a common understanding of the concept. For this reason, we have decided to compile in this article some of the best definitions that we have found, both in academia and in industry.
Definitions by various organizations
BID
Digital credentials are verifiable online recognitions of skills or knowledge you have acquired. These digital representations contain detailed information, including who received them, who issued them, achievements achieved, and issuance criteria.
Mozilla
A badge is an online representation of a skill you have acquired. Open Badges take this concept a step further, allowing you to verify your skills, interests and achievements through trusted organizations and adding this information to your badge image.
ILO
There is also talk of “open badges” as a new trend in digital credentials. This system would be more inclusive and would recognize academic achievements with the name of the person and the institution, the date of issue, the skills assessed, etc. In general, it is based on the principle of recognizing skills and competencies developed outside academic environments and faces the same challenges for distance assessment and the creation of a sustainable system of recognition at national, regional and global levels.

Emblems or badges are visual representations or indicators of achievements, skills and competencies verifiable online and in real time. Traditionally, recognition was done through trophies, decorations or diplomas, but just as methods evolve and adapt to modernity, a new way of giving recognition has emerged: digital badges.

Badges are secure, web-enabled credentials that contain detailed, verified information that employers can use to evaluate an individual’s potential.

It is a certification that is obtained online after passing short courses and that can be shared digitally. These are created, granted, stored and displayed online, and have detailed metadata. They represent a new way to promote and certify personal or educational achievements, from basic skills to complex developments in science and technology. They have generated a revolution at all educational levels, especially in labor education certification processes and in higher education as a whole.

Israel University
These digital credentials go beyond being simple recognitions, unlike traditional methods. They focus on more immediate achievements, such as demonstrating reading speed in the educational field or demonstrating qualities such as perseverance in the workplace. They are based on open source and are part of a global recognition standard, such as open badges 2.0. They are provided in a scalable, massive and reliable manner through specialized platforms that provide these services.
UTEL
These badges represent the new way to demonstrate your competencies and are made up of an image and metadata containing information about your accreditation. Each badge is unique and, in addition to the image provided by the issuing organization, contains specific information that allows validating its origin, the entity that issues it and other relevant characteristics to certify its authenticity in real time.
